Updates

Dear 4T families,

Although it was a short week with our first snow day, we still packed in lots of learning!  Here is a peek into the learning we did this week.

In reading, we prepared for and held our second debate of the year. The class worked hard to prepare individually and then with their entire team to be ready to support their side.  Ask your child which side of the debate they were on and why.

In math, we are began our unit on division. We spent the week practicing our division facts, solving extended division facts and finding the area of unknown sides.  The following IXL lessons will be helpful for your child to practice during this unit. IXL E.1-E.19

In science, the students are continuing to create designs that will control erosion in their stream tables. They were so excited to see that some of their ideas matched actual designs that they researched when they were finished!

In writing, we are in the middle of writing personal essays. The students learned how to write a strong five paragraph essay with an introduction and conclusion.  I have been very impressed with their writing in this unit!  Up next will be writing persuasive essays.

We still have several open slots for Mystery Readers! Please feel free to sign up if you'd like to come read to our class.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Updates

Dear 4T families,

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your family and friends. We had a great first week back in 4T with lots of new learning.

In math, we began our unit on double digit multiplication. The students will learn three ways to solve problems. They can use whichever method works best for them.  We will learn the traditional method this week.
Here are a few videos to explain partial products and the area model.

Everyday Math Partial Products

Area Model Multiplication

If your child is looking for additional practice at home for math, I would encourage them to spend time on IXL.  Lessons D.17-D.19 are all 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication!

In reading, we began our second nonfiction unit. We are studying all about the Industrial Revolution. The kids are researching to decide whether the Industrial Revolution was a positive or negative time in our history.

In writing, we are learning how to write essays. The kids are doing a great job writing strong paragraphs with a topic sentence and evidence to support their ideas.

In science, we began our erosion unit. The kids are in the process of experimenting with erosion. They are using erosion tables to test how rainfall, slopes, and floods cause erosion.  Later in the unit, they will create a design to slow the process of erosion.

That's all for now!
